The summer of 2007 showed us how vulnerable the Catawba River Basin is. The Green Industry suffered greatly and so did your landscape. The Green Industry is an 8.6 billion dollar industry that needs to rethink its ways. With the growth of people and irrigation systems along the basin we all need to step back and look at how landscaping is done today.
I have been around the Green Industry all my life. I have tracked the droughts since the mid 70's. The 7,8 and 9's is our driest times. Sometimes it can last for 5 years. But don't be fooled it can get very wet at times. This is why it is important to get back to basics with this red Clay soil. This type of soil is known to be very compacted, and very acidic.
Proper amendments can help in a lot of ways. The soil will not compact as easily, it will also drain keeping plants from getting wet feet, and if the PH is balanced everything works properly. Things like less water, weed control and fertilize. A strong root system is the foundation for strong healthy plants. When you plant a $5.00 plant dig a $25.00 hole. In the end the results will be much better.
So many times I see a ( so called ) landscaper chisel out a hole just enough to get the plant in. Sadly the plant never gets a chance. The hole should be 3 times the size of the root ball with lots of soil amendments. Same with turf so many times they run over it breaking the ground up maybe 1 to 2 inches when it should be 6 to 8 inches of sub-soiling. Water is the most damaging thing to our landscape.
